Abbott is admitted a Member of the Freshman Class on Probation and on condition of his passing a satisfactory examination in the following studies, viz. 20 Exercises in Jones' Greek Prose Composition, Second Book of the Iliad. (signed) Joshua Chamberlain President." Chamberlain commanded the famous 20th Maine Regiment in its defense of Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg, receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor for breaking the Confederate line with a fierce bayonet charge late in the battle and saving the day. Wounded at Petersburg 12 days later, he was promoted to Brigadier General, as he lay wounded, by General Grant. Grant then chose Chamberlain to accept Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Chamberlain displayed his humanity by ordering his troops to present arms as a gesture of respect for the defeated Confederate soldiers. He then returned to Maine to serve as Governor of Maine (1866–1870) and President of Bowdoin College (1870–1883). He died in 1914.
