Description
AVIATION PIONEER SAMUEL LANGLEY SIGNED 1883 LETTER! A handwritten letter signed, 7X4.5, on note paper with the embossed letterhead of The St. Botolph Club, 35 Boylston St., Boston, dated August 16, 1883. He writes to Dear Prof. Rood regarding an upcoming trip to Gloucester. , Samuel Pierpont Langley: (1834-1906). With only a high school education he became a professor of physics and astronomy; director of the Allegheny Observatory (1867-87); observed solar eclipses (1869, 1870, 1878, 1900); invented the bolometer for measuring the distribution of heat within the sun's spectrum; expedition to the top of Mt. Whitney CA for experiments (1881); secretary, Smithsonian Institution (from 1887); studied and built models of heavier-than-air machines, one of which, no. 5, flew for 3000 feet along the Potomac River (1896) and another, no. 6, flew for 4200 feet (1896), the first mechanically propelled heavier-than-air flights in the world; his attempts to build a man-carrying machine, launched on the Potomac with Charles M. Manly at the controls, failed, nearly drowning Manly (1903); his craft is on display at the National Museum Air & Space Museum; Langley Field VA is named in his honor; he is generally regarded now as having been a pioneer in the design and construction of heavier-than-air craft. A-1846 This is part of my personal collection of over 2500 aviation autographs dating from the very earliest days of aviation. The collection includes many, many air mail pilots, record holders, aviation personalities, military/naval aviators from 1914 through Vietnam, etc. Ill also be including about 1000 autographs from a group my mother and father collected during the late twenties, thirties and just before WWII. All are in excellent condition unless otherwise noted and all are authentic. $5.00 for carefully protected and packaged First Class Mail. Please ugnore any numbers that appear in [ ] brackets. They are my bibliographical reference keys to the source of information regarding this individual. MOST OF MY SALES OF AVIATION AUTOGRAPHS & PHOTOS ARE TO REPEAT BUYERS! I mail autographs and photographs very well protected from the weather and mishandling in padded envelopes with heavy cardboard for $5.00 for any number of autographs or photos. They are mailed by First Class Mail with Delivery Confirmation. I combine auctions, so regardless of how many photos you win in one of my auctions or buy from my STORE you pay ONLY $5.00 for postage & handling. My auction and "store" sales are United States only but I do make exceptions for Canadian and most European buyers. To assure a valid USPS receipt Canadian and European photos and autographs are mailed by International Priority Mail in Flat Rate envelopes protected from bending and weather. P&H to Canada is $12.00 for any number of photographs and/or autographs and $14.00 to most Eurpoean destinations. Large books and framed items that will not fit in a flat rate envelope will require a higher class of mailing. Please DO NOT USE CHECKOUT until after receiving my winning bid notification.
